Five Spaces in Your Home You Might Not Think to Clean

Deep cleaning your home freshens it up and makes it more comfortable to live in. While you might focus your attention on the more obvious dirt, it’s important to not forget the hidden spaces where dirt can hide. Here are five spaces you shouldn’t forget when it comes time to deep clean:

#1. The Exhaust Fans

Your kitchen and bathrooms have exhaust fans that draw air outside to reduce humidity and to eliminate odors. These fans work year round and often get missed during the cleaning cycle. Cleaning them at least once a year will let the work more efficiently and prolong their lifespan.

Cleaning them is relatively simple. Turn off the circuit for the fans at the electrical panel. Take the cover off the fan and clean it in a solution of warm water and dish soap. Set it aside to dry. Use a vacuum to clear dust from the fan motor. Use a damp cloth to wipe down the surfaces around the fan. Replace the covers and turn the circuit back on.

#2. The Window Coverings

Your curtains and blinds help keep you comfortable by controlling the amount of light and heat that can enter the home. They also collect the dust and odors that occur inside your home. Giving them a deep clean is something you should do at least once a year.

Vacuum the curtains to remove dust. If you have pets, you may need to use a lint roller to get rid of the hair. Check the curtains for stains. You can use warm water and a mild detergent to spot clean as needed. If your curtains are washable, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning. If spot cleaning non-washable curtains doesn’t work, you may have to have them professionally cleaned service.

For blinds, use a wood duster to remove dust. A cloth sprayed with all-purpose cleanser can remove dirty spots from the surface.

#3. The Walls and Baseboards

Vertical surfaces, like walls and baseboards, tend to collect dust. Corners and hallways can also gain fingerprints and other dirty spots. For otherwise clean walls, use a wood duster to remove dust. Don’t forget to run the duster along the baseboards as well.

If the wall is stained or dirty, you will need to use a solution of warm water and mild detergent to wipe it down. Dip a cloth into the solution and wring it out. Starting at the bottom of the wall start wiping upwards, rinsing the cloth frequently. Come back and wipe the wall down with clean water. Use a dry microfiber cloth to dry the surface.

Wipe the baseboards down with a dry microfiber cloth to remove dust. If necessary, follow up with a damp cloth to remove stubborn deposits.

#4. The Refrigerator Coils

Your refrigerator cools its interior by removing heat from that space and send it outside via the external coils. If the refrigerator’s coils get caked with dust, it makes the refrigerator work harder, straining the motor, and causing excessive wear and tear. Cleaning the refrigerator coils at least once a year will help keep the refrigerator working efficiently.

Turn the refrigerator off at the circuit breaker. Use a vacuum to remove dust and dirt from around the coils. Take a moment to vacuum the fan at the same time. This will help the refrigerator work at its most efficient level.

#5. The Ceiling Fans

You would think that a ceiling fan, being so high off the ground, wouldn’t have much dirt or dust on it. However, because it circulates air, it tends to collect anything floating in the air. This dust and dirt can accumulate on the fan blades as well as around the motor unit. Do a deep clean of your ceiling fans at least once a year.

  • Turn off the fan and let it stop before you try to clean it. Use a microfiber cloth to remove dust from the fan blades. Use all-purpose cleaner and a soft cloth to clean the blades starting from the inside and working towards the outside.
  • Use a vacuum attachment to remove dust from around the motor unit. If you want to deep clean this area of the fan with cleaner and water, be sure to take care and not get the motor itself wet.
